Abstract

This article explores the role of Sufism, especially the Nahdlatul Wathan Hizib Order, in facilitating social change and the development of Islamic society in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The people of Lombok before Islam had a strong tradition of spirituality, including animism. The arrival of Islam brought with it the tradition of Sufism and tarekat, which emphasized inner appreciation and closeness to Allah. The Nahdlatul Wathan Hizib Tarekat was founded by Maulana Shaykh TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid in 1964, emerged as a modern order (neo-Sufism) that acted as an agent of social and religious change. This institute integrates sharia and Sufism, tawhid and dhikr, as the path to God. Through the practice of dhikr and wirid, this institute facilitates psychiatric experiences such as fana' and kasyaf, which are the core of Sufism teachings. This study examines how the Nahdlatul Wathan Hizib Tarekat as an organization (jam'iyyah), uses the inner appreciation method to encourage positive changes in society. The institute not only focuses on individual spirituality, but also contributes to social development through a balanced approach between religious practice and community life.
